Homemade Spa Treatments

Fun, easy, cheap homemade spa treatments that are all natural!

For awhile I was making and selling (and giving as gifts!) some natural bath and body care products. I still have requests for some popular products. This was such an enjoyable part of my herbal learning experience.
Many people enjoy the health and radiance they feel after using herbs and natural ingredients in body care products. Others like to create things for themselves or enjoy saving money. And then some simply enjoy not having an impact on the environment.

Whatever interest you may have in making homemade spa treatments be assured that these products are using ingredients that are not cancer causing or reproductive altering. These ingredients are healing and therapeutic to the skin going down deep with all natural goodness!

To really know what your cosmetics and skin care products contain check out Skin Deep Cosmetics Database and then be sure to come back here to find out how to make your own!

Something that has really caused me to want to make my own baby skin care products is the findings of scientists and researchers on the harmful ingredients in baby lotions and shampoos. Causing reproductive problems and cancer is not what I want for my grandchildren!

Natural Body Care
Ingredients

Beeswax
Castile Soap
Cocoa Butter
Shea Butter
Coconut Oil
Sea Salts
Epsom Salts
Carrier Oils
Essential Oils
Herbs

The ingredients are easy to come by from a grocery store, from your herbal garden, from a health food store, or special ordered from a good supplier.

One thing to note about natural body care products is that they generally do not have the shelf life that store bought products do. These recipes do not contain harmful preservatives.

To extend the shelf life I usually advice people to store in the fridge if possible and use clean hands or a popsicle stick to remove product from the container.

Storing these products in a warm humid bathroom will encourage bacterial or fungal growth and cause it to deteriorate fast.

However, you are going to like these products so much that you'll have used it up long before it becomes contaminated! These also make wonderful gifts.

Homemade Facial Masks

Homemade Facial Masks

Best homemade facial masks using herbs, kitchen ingredients or other natural ingredients.

Facial masks or masques are preparations that are easy to do at home. They use various dried, mashed or powdered ingredients that are mixed with a liquid to create a paste. This paste is applied to the face and left on for a good 20 minutes or so.

What are the benefits of homemade facials?
Homemade facials cleanse the skin, going deeply into the pores. It's really recommended to use these facials after a facial steam or a warm shower. This then opens the pores allowing the mask to penetrate into the pores.

The ingredients of these masks all offer nourishing qualities to the skin. It's like feeding your skin nourishing whole foods! For this reason it's really important to use organic ingredients to avoid toxins going into your skin.
What kinds of homemade facial masks are there?
There are different types of masks. Some use clay, some use herbs, honey, fruit, grains, dairy or vegetables. These ingredients make for some of the best facials.

Clay masks are absorbent, drawing impurities from the skin, cleansing and tightening. This type is better for oily, large pored skin.

Honey masks are easy to use. It adds moisture to the skin and is good for dry and damaged skin.
Fruit masks help exfoliate the skin naturally. The fruit acids are called alpha hydroxy acids and are quite popular in the cosmetic industry.

Homemade Facial Steam

Homemade Facial Steam

Easy homemade facial steam using herbs and natural ingredients. Give your face a treat!

I admit I don't often take the time for a facial steam. Hey, I have kids! But when I do I often question why I don't do this more often.

Facial steams are a great way to employ natural skin care. No harmful chemicals, little expense and it is very therapeutic! A steam deep cleans the pores and increases circulation. Using this homemade facial steam once a week before a facial mask will open the pores and allow greater penetration of the mask.

Look in your kitchen cupboard for herbs to add to the steam. Herbal tea bags such as mints or chamomile work great for this purpose! Herbs and spices such as oregano, thyme, sage, basil and rosemary can be used as well. Great way to use up herbs that might be a little too old for cooking!

Here is a recipe for facial steams using other garden herbs.
Many of these you can grow in your own garden!

Why do People Give the Silent Treatment?

If you are being given the silent treatment, you are being punished for something, but you are not actually being told what that something is and how you can make up for it. The first step is to notice how you are feeling in the moment- do you feel pulled out of yourself, trying to read your partner’s mind?  Are you angry?  Apologetic?  Scared? Notice just how much you feel hooked into trying to work out this puzzle.  It is not your job to read your partner’s mind.  It is not your job to fix something for someone who isn’t using their words.  Give yourself permission to stop trying.  Take the focus off of your partner’s puzzle, and bring attention to your own feelings.

Why do People Give the Silent Treatment?

There are all sorts of motives for and styles of the silent treatment, but they all boil down to one commonality: people give the silent treatment because it gives them control over the person they are treating with silence
The silent treatment is about control
It only works if the person being given the silent treatment relinquishes control to the one being silent.  The more you try to get your partner to break their silence, the more you are allowing yourself to be controlled by him or her, and the less likely it is that they will talk.  After all, you are giving them exactly what they want, and you are exposing all of your vulnerability while they expose none of theirs.
As difficult as it may be, it is important not to engage in this dynamic. Give yourself the attention that you are tempted to give to your partner.  Let your partner know that you are not willing to try to read his or her mind, but would be glad to talk about whatever the issue is that caused the silent treatment to begin with.  The ball is no longer in your court, and it is up to your partner to pick it up.  Take your attention away from this passive-aggressive dynamic, and focus on your own feelings and needs.
Trust Me I've seen this and been there and I'm not going to live it anymore.
