Here is a good basic set of hooks:
some yarn any kind you like will work
a round ponytail
and these instructions:
Round 1: Single crochet 38 single crochet stitches around a pony elastic
Round 2: Double Crochet into every stitch around
Round 3: 3 Double Crochet in every stitch around.
