DIY Beauty Secrets at Home

I like nothing better than taking ME TIME
Here are several beauty secrets to do at Home
***
First things you need to learn about
5 Simple Ingredients for Homemade Beauty Products
I love it when I know exactly what's going into and onto my body. When I can name every ingredient in something, without resorting to phonetically sounding it out. When the stuff that goes on my lips (or in my mouth) is actually edible. When the oil that soaks into my skin comes from olives, rather than petroleum. When my cleanser smells nice because part of it was once real flowers.

So now I make a lot of my own beauty products. And actually, it's so easy and really fast, too. Faster than running down to the pharmacy for another tube of whatever. Make a list, go get these things, and try some recipes out!

Here are 5 fantastic and cheap ingredients to get you started:

Organic coconut oil (mine was@ $8)
Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which has antimicrobial properties (and which babies get a good dose of in mum's milk). It's a good saturated fat, but got a bad reputation from the hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated varieties found in processed foods. So stick to the extra virgin or minimally refined versions.

*cook with it - it doesn't break down at high temperatures, it lasts ages, and it's creamy at cool temperatures
*use it for creams like deodorant or chest rub
*use it for cleansers and make up removers
*use it as a conditioner for hair or a moisturizer for skin

Um, just looking at all these cross links and you can see how much I love coconut oil! I actually have two varieties - the extra virgin (which is less processed and much more coco-nutty smelling) and the refined (which is more subtle, when you don't want a strong scent).

***********

Organic extra virgin olive oil (mine was @ $7)
Olive oil is rich in vitamin E and is known as a heart-healthy fat.

*cook with it
*use it in cleansers and make up removers
*use as a natural furniture polish
*use as a moisturizer for skin or lips or hair

NOTE: store out of direct light if possible

I love when I rub olive oil into something I'm cooking - my hands get soooo soft!! We also used olive oil to get rid of Nelle's cradle cap when she was a baby - just rub some onto the scalp and then use a comb to remove the flaky bits. (Sorry that sounded so disgusting!)

***********

Organic lavender essential oil (mine was @ $10, but you only use a few drops at a time!)
Lavender can provide relief from insomnia, headaches, and also has antihistamine properties.

*put a few drops in your bath for extra relaxation
*add a few drops to your laundry rinse cycle to make your clothes or linens smell amazing
*add a few drops to homemade moisturizers or cleansers
*add a few drops to 8 oz apricot kernel oil for a relaxing massage oil

NOTE: store essential oils out of the reach of children and out of direct light if possible

I love the smell of lavender. Though it was one of those smells that repulsed me during pregnancy (along with coffee! what a nightmare that was!) so it took me awhile to get back into it ...

***********

Good raw honey (mine was @ $7)
Raw honey hasn't been heated to high temperatures, so it retains all its natural goodness. Honey has antiseptic and anti fungal properties, and is soothing on the throat. A truly natural sugar.

*cook with it (or just use it raw!)
*use for mild cuts or burns or fungal infections
*makes a good face mask
*helps soothe sore or dry throats - try 1 Tbs lemon juice + 1 Tbs honey + 1 cup hot water

NOTE: don't give honey to babies less than 12 months old, or as your doctor recommends

One for the cake, one for me ... one for the cake, one for me ...

***********

Tea tree oil (mine was @ $6, but like any essential oil it'll last you ages)
Another great antiseptic and anti fungal essential oil. This one comes from an Australian native tree, and has quite a potent smell. So use in moderation!

*add a few drops to your hot wash cycle as an extra disinfectant for towels and linens
*helps the skin recover from shaving or you can apply a drop or two directly to mild cuts or abrasions
*use in conjunction with white vinegar to clean the house - try 1 c vinegar + few drops oil + a bucket of hot water to mop tiled floors or without the water to clean the toilet
*is a natural insect repellent

NOTE: store essential oils out of the reach of children and out of direct light if possible

You know that pine-y smell that those (toxic) cleaners have? Tea tree is the new pine, baby.

***********

I hope this has given you just a little inspiration to try making some homemade beauty products! How about a spa day for you and some friends? Where you make your own creams and cleansers together. Have champagne and chocolates. And laugh, a lot.

Treat yourself this weekend!

The Aspirin Mask via Breaking Down Beauty
"Works wonders on your face. Salicylic acid helps clean out pores and battle acne. All you need is water;     3 aspirin tablets. You can also add honey if you want a binding agent."

My Favorite 2 Ingredient Homemade Lemon Facial Scrub via New Nostalgia
"Lightens sun damaged areas, exfoliates, helps with blackheads and breakouts. Leaves skin super smooth and soft."

"Try this exfoliate for super soft skin."

Black-head Remover
"Use half lemon from the fridge (doesn’t matter if some juice is already squeezed from it) and put 3-4 drops of honey on it. Rub the lemon on your face, emphasizing trouble areas. Leave the lemon and honey mixture on your face for 5 minutes and then wash it with cold water. You will be able to see the results immediately. Additionally, lemon juice will also fade other marks/spots on the face and honey will moisturize."

SKIN TONERS And ASTRINGENTS
Apple cider vinegar is naturally antiseptic and antibacterial, plus it helps balance the pH of your skin (which is actually supposed to be slightly acidic). I use this after I wash my face with honey. The smell is a bit potent at first, but don’t be dismayed!  The smell quickly dissipates. You can add different ingredients like brewed green tea or herbs to mask the smell, but it doesn’t really bother me. As easy as it is to make (which you’ll see below)

MAKING YOUR OWN ACV TONER
Step number one – acquire some apple cider vinegar. You want the good stuff. Trust me. Don’t skimp on whatever is cheapest at the store. You want raw, organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar that is still full of enzymes, minerals, nutrients, and beneficial strains of bacteria (called the ‘mother’).

Step number two – add your ACV to a small glass container mixed with filtered water. Start with a 1:1 ratio (50% ACV, 50% water), but you might find you need to dilute the mixture more based on the sensitivity of your skin.

Step number three – take a cotton pad or the corner of a washcloth and dip it into the solution. Spread evenly all over your face after washing it.

Don’t rinse it off, but just let it air dry, then finish with a light layer of coconut oil as moisturizer.

This toner is incredible for balancing your skin tone, getting rid of acne and pimples, and giving you that ‘glow’ – naturally! And did I mention how cheap this is?!

"Most commercial toners have alcohol and chemicals in them and are too harsh."

Specialty cooking stores such as Williams-Sonoma... OR... You can try your hand at
Making your own rosewater, see recipe below)

1/4 cup glycerin
2 tbs. Witch hazel
1 tbs. Almond oil

Mix together rosewater and glycerin. Add witch hazel and almond oil. Stir
Completely to dissolve. Pour into a pretty bottle.

Recipe for rosewater: To prepare rosewater, first gather fresh rose
Blossoms; do this during the morning, after the dew has evaporated. Place the petals
In a glass, stainless steel, or enamel saucepan and cover them
With distilled water. Weigh the floating petals down with a heat-resistant
Glass dish. Place the pan over low heat and allow the pot to release steam for
At least an hour. You should begin to see drops of rose oil floating on the
surface of the water. Do not allow the water to boil. When the water has
taken on a rosy hue, feels thick and soft, and shows evidence of rose oil on its
surface, strain the liquid through a tea strainer, using your fingers to
press all the liquid from the petals. Store in refrigerator. Rosewater may be
used as a skin toner; just apply to the face with a cotton ball. Important
Notes: NEVER use rose petals that have been sprayed with any kind of pesticide for
making rosewater!! Consider using only enough distilled water to cover the
rose petals. Otherwise, the solution becomes more dilute. Please remember to
use only the petals, not the sepals, stamens, or green foliated bracket
holding the petals in their grouping.

10 drops rosemary essential oil

Mix all the ingredients together in a spray bottle and shake well. Allow to
settle for at least 12 hours. Store in a cool dry place.

Angel Cream

For the little ones learning to say prayers, I thought this was too cute

Add some glittery eye shadow all crunched up to a small amount of hand
cream. Add to a small jar and decorate. Add poem. Rub a small amount on the back
of a child's hand before going to bed to attract angels to watch over them in
the night.

So angels will watch over you as you dream

the essential oil last and mix well. Refrigerate the mixture for 10 minutes.
Apply a layer to your clean face and neck area and leave it on for 20
minutes. Rinse well with warm water. Apple Cucumber Facial Mask is best when used
immediately as the ingredients are perishable. The leftovers can be

1 mashed avocado
Juice from 1/2 lemon
1/2 C. plain yogurt
Petroleum jelly

Mix together the avocado, lemon juice and yogurt. Slather over hands; leave on for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse off. This will gently slough off dull skin and will gradually fade age spots, also. After rinsing, lavish on petroleum jelly or super-rich hand cream and then wear white cotton gloves for one hour or overnight for maximum hydrating.  Note: do not use this slougher more than twice a week as it can be irritating. Also, do not apply it to cuts or sores as it may sting

Baby Oil

Chamomile herb
Light oil (olive is great)
Make an oil infusion by covering the chamomile with oil. Let sit in a window for a couple of weeks. Strain and use. It smells like apples and is very soothing. (You can also simmer over low heat for about
30 min- 1 hour instead of the window sill)!.

Baby Lotion

1 1/2 c. aloe vera gel
1 1/2 tsp. lanolin
1 1/2 tsp. Vitamin E oil
1/3 c. virgin coconut oil
1 oz. pure beeswax (white),filtered
3/4 c. camelina oil
1 1/2 tsp. essential oil (optional) 2 tbsp. lavender powder
1 1/2 tsp. chamomile powder

In a blender, mix aloe gel, lanolin, and vitamin E oil. Using a glass container, melt coconut oil and beeswax until fully melted. Gently stir in camelina oil. Slowly pour oils into blender on low. At this point oils will thicken and turn white. Stop blender and add essential oil, if used. Blend gently in short bursts. Do NOT over blend. Add lavender and chamomile powders, blend gently until incorporated. While mixture is still warm, pour into containers. This mixture will thicken quickly as it cools. This lotion doesn't leave oily feeling to skin and absorbs well. Great as a massage lotion for baby. Makes approximately 2 1/2 cups.

Baby Towelettes

2 tbsp. baby oil

2 tbsp. baby bath

2 cups of water

Mix together and put paper towels in, my aunt gave them to me with the roll cut in half and the tube out in a round container, but I put them in an old "huggies" container (I pull about half of  them off the roll, give or take a few, cut them in half, and them fold them to fit my container) when I give them I get a tupper ware bowl rectangle if possible , if not I use a round one, and then tell them how to do it for the rectangle container.

Aspen Dreams Bath Salts

This scent is very woody, and is suited for soothing your muscles and relaxing in the tub. It is very masculine in scent, I think. I enjoy this after a long day at work; it makes me feel comfortable and content. Women love it as well as men do.

The ingredients are:
2 cups of Epsom salts (or a mixture Epsom/sea)
2 tablespoons of baking soda
essential oils:
5 drops of rosewood
2 drops cedar wood
2 drops Chamomile
a nice jar with a tight fitting lid

To make the salts:
Mix the salts and baking soda in a bowl very well.  Mix oils in a small cup. Take them and pour them evenly over the salt.  Mix the two very well. Let it sit for over an hour before placing in a jar and sealing.
If you are going to color these, use yellow and red to make a light brown.

Soak your feet in this solution for 20 minutes, three times a day. Vinegar discourages fungal growth by increasing the surface acidity of the skin.  After soaking feet, apply undiluted tea tree oil, which has powerful anti-fungal properties. Apply it to the affected area two to three times a day. The best way to prevent athlete's foot is to keep your feet clean and dry. Choose cotton socks over synthetic blends.

ATHLETE'S FOOT TREATMENT

20 to 30 garlic cloves, minced
2 to 4 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 to 4 tsp. powdered cloves
5 oz. 100-proof vodka

Add garlic, cinnamon, and cloves to vodka in a dark-colored glass jar or bottle with lid. Seal tightly.  Store out of direct sunlight for two weeks, shaking to mix every few days. The tincture will be ready to use in 14 days. To treat athlete's foot, use cotton balls or a cloth to apply the tincture to the entire sole of the foot as well as between all the toes. Apply twice a day, morning and night. Let dry, and then dust the entire foot with cornstarch. If a rash or any unusual irritation develops, discontinue using Athlete's Foot Treatment.

If, after having used this treatment for two weeks and athlete's foot symptoms continue, consult your physician.

HAIR:
5 Ways to Improve Hair Naturally

Now that I’ve been pregnant several times (9) and had the wonderful thick hair that accompanies pregnancy and seen it thin again after pregnancy, I started searching for and testing ways to naturally promote hair growth.

Of course, some of the post-pregnancy shed is entirely hormonal and somewhat inevitable, but I’ve found some tips that seem to help promote hair growth and strength. I also wonder if these tips help baby’s hair growth in utero, as my kids have all come with a LOT of hair

It is also important to remember that the condition of the hair and skin can be a good indication of the state of the body on the inside, so it is important address the body as a whole to improve hair and skin for the long term.

Either way, these natural tips are also good for the body in other ways, so there isn’t much to lose. Have you ever done anything to help improve hair growth?

1. Consume Enough Protein

Protein is essential for hair growth, so consuming enough protein can make sure that the body has the necessary building blocks for hair. Complete sources of protein like meats and fish are the most beneficial for hair growth and many meats also contain iron, which is another essential aspect of proper hair growth.

Foods like meats, fish, eggs, and especially bone broths (see below) are excellent for hair growth. These foods also contain necessary fats that help promote healthy hormones (see below) and healthy hair!

2. Get The Vitamins!

Some vitamins help promote hair growth- most notably: Vitamin C and Biotin. The body needs Vitamin C to produce collagen, which is necessary for healthy hair and skin. Vitamin C also helps with iron absorption, which promotes hair growth (plus it is an immune booster!). Since the body can’t manufacture Vitamin C, it is one vitamin that must be obtained from food or supplements. Foods like citrus, broccoli and spinach all contain Vitamin C.

Biotin (and other b-vitamins) can also promote faster and stronger hair growth, and it is also good for the skin. Biotin is a water soluble B-Vitamin that is also used in proper digestion of fats and sugars. Eggs, nuts, berries, fish and some vegetables all provide Biotin, though in small amounts, so sometimes a supplement can be helpful.

3. Up the Gelatin

I’ve posted before about the many benefits of Gelatin, including its support of healthy hair, skin and nails. Gelatin is one thing I make sure to consume daily in some form, either in bone broth or gelatin powder (or both). From a previous post:

“Gelatin is largely composed of the amino acids glycine and proline, which many people don’t consume in adequate amounts as they are found in the bones, fibrous tissues and organs of animals and as a population, we don’t consume these parts as much anymore. These amino acids are needed not only for proper skin, hair and nail growth, but for optimal immune function and weight regulation!

Glycine, which makes up about 1/3 of the amino acids in gelatin powder is anti-inflammatory and evidence is finding that it can help speed wound healing. Glycine in gelatin can also help improve sleep ease and quality.”

Here are some of my favorite ways to incorporate Gelatin.

4. Balance the Hormones

“When it comes to health, hormones and gut bacteria have a much bigger effect than many people realize. In fact, these two factors can destroy health even if everything else (diet, supplements, etc) is optimized. Conversely, fixing hormones and gut bacteria can do a lot to boost health, even if not all the other factors are optimal. In fact, there are even studies about using certain hormone reactions to heal brain trauma.”

Hormones are often a major cause of hair loss or poor hair growth and unfortunately, there can be many causes of hormone imbalance. This is also the reason for hair loss after pregnancy. Of course, some steps can be taken to improve hair while working to balance hormones, and these are my top tips for balancing hormones naturally.

Stress and lack of sleep are two major contributors to hormone imbalance and here are some suggestions for optimizing those.

5. External Hair Treatments

Though the major causes of poor hair quality and growth are internal, external treatments can help improve existing hair and prevent breakage. From a previous post:

“I got this tip from Pinterest and have been amazed at what an intensive conditioning and strengthening treatment it is! To make, stir 1 tablespoon of Gelatin powder in to 1/2 cup of cool water until mixed. Add 1/2 cup warm/hot water, 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon of honey to create a thick gel/liquid. Pour into hair and massage through hair and scalp. Leave on for at least 5 minutes and rinse with hot water. Shampoo as normal.”

Another great hair treatment is to mix melted coconut oil and honey and massage through hair. Leave on for at least 20 minutes and then wash normally. My favorite ratio is 4 tablespoons of melted coconut oil and 1 tablespoon of honey.

FACE CARE:
All- Natural Facial Masks

Three Choices
Depending on your skin type, here are some great masks to try. For oily
skin use some plain Milk of Magnesia, rub it on and let dry, then rinse
with lukewarm water. It absorbs oil wonderfully!

For Normal/combination skin mix one egg and 1/2 cup cooked instant
oatmeal and a teaspoon olive oil until smooth. Spread on your face and
leave 15 min then rinse.

For dry skin, and my favorite, mix one egg yolk, one teaspoon honey and
a teaspoon olive oil and some vitamin E oil if you have it. Smooth on
and leave on for 15 min. , rinse in lukewarm water and pat dry. If your
skin is a bit dry you can put a dab or two of either olive oil, or any
other light oil, or plain crisco if you want something heavier, on your
moist skin after washing or a mask and your face is set without the $$
some people spend for the same look.

Instead of Soap
This is for the lady who wanted a homemade facial mask. First, clean
your face with water only... NEVER SOAP! You can open your pores with
hot compresses (washcloth). For a facial scrub, moisten oatmeal to a
"goo", use it to scrub your face (not around your eyes). Wash off with
cool water. You may also make a paste of the oatmeal and allow it to
dry. Remove with cool water.

You may also beat an egg white, put it on your face and let it dry,
rinse with cool water. Sliced fresh cucumber placed on your closed eyes
will reduce bagginess and dark circles.

To make your hair shine, rub in some regular mayonnaise, shampoo out
after 15 minutes.

Honey
The best facial mask that i have found is Honey. Use warm cloth to open
pores, smear on honey, leave on 15 to 30 minutes, rinse off with warm
water, then use cold water to close pores. Use for 3 days in a row and
then once a week sometimes I mix a little ground oatmeal with the
honey... great mask...

Feels Good
One my daughter and I had fun with and found to have a cleansing and
softening effect was to mix regular clean kitty litter, the clay kind,
with water and strain out the grit. It really felt good.
-- Carol

Exfoliating Mask
For an easy exfoliating mask take three tablespoons olive oil or any
good oil and one tablespoon kosher salt mix together and gently rub into
dry skin do not use around eye area work really good on elbows and feet
but can be used on cheeks and forehead.
-- Donna R.

Egg Whites
I use egg whites. Just beat one egg white until it is frothy. Spread it
all over your face. Wait until it dries . Rinse it off. My face feels
very clean and "tight" after this application. And then I use the yolk
for cooking.

Egg Yolk
The best homemade facial mask that I have used is a raw egg yolk. just
apply the raw yolk to your face and neck for 30 minutes and rinse with
cool water. Egg yolks are high in vitamin A. The mask is very effective
in healing blemishes.

Your Skin Type
for trouble-prone skin: mix oatmeal with water to form a paste for
normal to oily skin: use an egg white.
for dry skin: use an egg yolk
In all cases, spread mixture on face; allow to dry. Rinse thoroughly
with cool water.
For oily skin, witch hazel makes an inexpensive toner.
For dry skin, you may want to add moisturizer while skin is still damp.

Oatmeal
The cheapest and best facial mask I have ever come up with is oatmeal
processed to a powder in the blender and either skim milk or if you are
trying to fade spots lemon juice. Really works well for me and I have
dry skin.

More Choices
The kind of the mask you want to use depends on your skin type.
For dry skin, try:
- an egg yolk mixed with olive oil and warmed honey;
- sour cream;
- plain olive oil;
- avocado.

For oily skin:
- dissolve a teaspoon of baking yeast in a small amount of warm milk,
wait until foamy, then apply (best done in the bath tub);
- puree flesh of a tomato and mix with some potato flour to make a
paste;
- cucumber (it will whiten your skin);
- beaten egg whites with a few drops of lemon juice (great for getting
rid of blackheads);
- carrots (but don't use this one more than about every other week
because it can overdry your skin). This one will make you look tanned.

General refreshing masks:
- grapes (just cut a berry in half and rub lightly);
- strawberries (test behind your ear first, many people are allergic to
strawberries used this way even though they can eat them just fine);
- honey and ricotta cheese;

Many fruits and vegetables can also be used to good effect. Anything
acidic (lemon, strawberries, etc) will tend to whiten and refresh your
skin, but you need to be careful if your skin is dry.

In general, don't apply masks more often than about twice a week, and
try to vary the ingredients.

It is a good idea to test the mask first. Apply a small amount behind
your ear, wait 20 minutes, then wash off. Then wait 24 hours. If the
skin behind your ear is normal, then go ahead and use the mask.

Egg Yolk and Honey
A reader recently asked if anyone had a recipe for homemade facial
masks. I often use an egg yolk and honey mask. Just mix one egg yolk
with a little honey and spread it on your face and neck. When it dries,
rinse it off. Your skin will feel so fresh and soft!

Lavender Scrubbing Mask

This mask is very flexible and various herbs can be substituted for the
rose and lavender. It's a great gentle scrub and you can leave on for as
long and short as you wish.

1 Cup Oats
1/2 Cup Wheat germ
1/4 Cup Ground Sesame Seed
Dried Rose Petals and Lavender Flowers

In a food processor, grind up the oats and add the wheat germ. Then add
the sesame seeds and roses. Grind again until the petals or flowers are
finely chopped. Once the mixture is well ground, remove and spread over
a cookie sheet. Heat the oven at a low temperature. Make sure it is as
low as possible as you don't want to burn the mixture. Place the cookie
sheet in the oven and let the mixture dry for a few moments. Remove and
add to a jar with a lid. To use pour some out on your palm and moisten
with warm water. Apply and gently scrub your face with a circular
motion. Let sit for a few moments and rinse off.

**Note: The mask is dried in the oven to stop the growth of bacteria and
molds. Don't add to a jar that you haven't cleaned in boiling water
before hand.

Lovely Lavender Oat Mask

1/2 c. ground whole oatmeal
6 drops lavender essential oil

Mix all well. I recommend that you add the essential oil before you
grind the oats in a blender or food processor. You can add up to 12
drops per mix if you like a stronger fragrance mask. Lavender is great
for the skin and one of the most 'safe' of the essential oils to use
directly on the skin.

This recipe is great because you can cater to your skin type. For each
mask you will need 2 tablespoons of your mix.
Normal skin type: add enough whole milk to make a thick paste
Oily skin type: add enough water to make a thick paste
Dry skin type: Add whole fresh cream to make a thick paste.

Smooth mask over the whole face avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 20
minutes then rinse. Rinsing is easiest when you use a warm cloth to soak
and soften the mask before gently removing the mask.

GIVE YOURSELF A FACELIFT--AND FEEL BETTER.

*Before using any mask--

Your face should be washed or cleaned with cream. Remember to protect
your lips and eye areas. Leave mask on for 15-20 min. and washed off
with warm water followed by a cold rinse.

Almond Facial Mask- Pulverized almonds made into a paste with a small
amount of liquid. Best for oily skin, almonds soften the skin, cleanse
it with their abrasive action as well protects it with protein.

Apricot Facial Mask- Fresh or dried mashed apricots mixed with warm
alive oil to form a paste, Dry skin moisturizer, and vitamin A source.
Bananas can also be used using the same method for dry skin.

Avocado Facial Mask- Mashed avocado heated over a double boiler until
just warm. Dry skin moisturizer, provides protein and vitamins.

Brewer's Yeast Facial Mask- Mix into a paste using a small amount of
water.

Cucumber- Slices or juice applied to face and hands, if desired. Leave
on 10-15 min, then rinsed off. Best for oily skin (Astringent.
cleansing, bleaching for freckles and discolored skin.)

Carrot Facial- Carrot shavings with a little lemon juice can be applied
directly to the face like a facial mask. (Astringent, provides vitamin
A.) Best for oily skin.

Fennel Facial Mask- For wrinkles try a strong infusion of fennel herb or
seed, and a liberal amount of honey or yogurt. Antiseptic, Soothing,
tones skin as well as removes wrinkles.

Honey Facial Mask- Massage a small amount of slightly heated honey over
face. Leave on 15 min. Honey is a good antiseptic, cleanses pores, and
tones skin. Good for oily and blemished skin. You can add wheat germ to
the honey for abrasive action, protein, and vitamins.

Oatmeal Facial Mask- Apposite of dry regular oatmeal and a little warm
water. Good for oily skin. (Dry oatmeal rubbed directly on skin will
remove flaky, peeling skin)

Tomato Facial- Apply tomato slices or mashed tomato directly to face.
Leave on 15 min, and rinse off. Good astringent and good against
blackheads.

Facial Masks - Do It Yourself Mask
To make a mask you basically blend the clay into various and sundry
things to moisten it, spread it on your face, let it dry for about 15
mins, and rinse it off.

Some suggested masks...
For very oily skin... moisten with Witch Hazel, or with Cypress or
Cistus hydrosol. Ground oatmeal is a good addition here.

For 'normal' skin, blend with:
Honey
Egg yolk
Any type of hydrosol
Finely mashed papaya or avocado
And or all of the above

For dry skin, again, the mashed avocado, your favorite facial oil. egg
yolk... cream...

For all the masks you can add three or four drops of an appropriate
essential oil...make sure the EO is blended really well into the liquid.

Glow Mask
1 tbsp fuller's earth
1 tbsp honey
1 tbsp mashed papaya
Mix and put on face for 20 mins. rinse off.

Magical Egg White Mask
Beat the white of one egg until stiff. Use hands or a washcloth to apply
an even layer over your face. Wait until it gets stiff, then rinse off.
If mixed with some lemon, it deep cleanses while taking away blotchiness.

Silky Smooth Facial & Bath
Facial:
1 cup fresh cucumber juice
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup plain yogurt
6 drops Lavender
4 drops Geranium
Mix well and apply to face just before bath...

Bath:
8 drops Jasmine
8 drops Fennel
2 tbsp. Frac. coconut or Jojoba
Light a candle and relax........

Oatmeal Mask and More
1 Tbls. oatmeal powder
egg white
2-3 drops of lemon oil

Mix and spread on face. leave on till dry or 20 min.

Another one is Brewers yeast and water or milk and I have heard of
powdering red beans and adding water to that. Brewers yeast is really
hard to wash off so probably it is best to use with an essential oil
and/or milk and it can stain washcloths. It really makes your skin look
great though.

Peel-Off Mask
1 packet Un-flavored Gelatin
1/2 Cup Fruit Juice or Herb Infusion
Heat together gently to dissolve the gelatin. Let cool until almost set.
Apply to face, let dry completely, peel off.

Yogurt/Buttermilk/Betonite Clay Face/Body Mask
I used:
1 tsp *hot* Water
1/2 tsp Dead Sea Salts, dissolved in the hot water.
2 tsp Buttermilk
2 Tbls Plain Yogurt
5 drops Chamomile EO
15 drops Lavender EO
3 drops Tea Tree EO
2 slightly heaped Tbls of Betonite Clay (Powdered, bought at health food
store)

Mixed these up and went to take a nice soaking steamy shower. Put on
face, arms, torso, and legs. Was tingly, cooling, and felt kinda nice.
Let sit for 15.. 20ish minutes, then rinsed off. It left a slight oily
residue on my skin, which I can only assume was the buttermilk since the
yogurt I used was supposedly non-fat. I've never had the oil residue
left from my usual face mask recipe. Finished shower. Skin still felt
tingly for a few hours afterwards, but it was a nice sort of tingle. I
have somewhat sensitive skin, but not terribly. So far, no pimples or
red spots have appeared from this little experiment, and it's 2 days
later. I think it was a success. Anyone who wants, feel free to use. I
include yogurt and buttermilk because they're two natural sources of
alpha hydroxy acids. If anyone recalls the stories of southern women
using buttermilk to keep their skin soft and pale. Well I'm trying it
for nixing freckles. We'll see. Store bought AHA lotions have worked so
far, but they tend to be a little harsh. :)

Mask for Oily Skin
2 Tablespoons of Green Clay
1 teaspoon of Aloe Vera Juice
1/2 teaspoon of Vegetable Oil or Jojoba Oil
1 drop of Bergamot Oil

Mask for Sensitive Skin
1 Tablespoon of Rose Clay
1-2 teaspoons of Avocado Oil
1 drop of Rose Oil
1 drop of Roman Chamomile Oil
Use water, if necessary, to make a paste. Use a little more clay if too
runny.
>From "The Aromatherapy Book" by Jeanne Rose

Mask for Mature or Aging Skin
1 Tablespoon of Rose Clay
1 Tablespoon of Instant Oatmeal or finely ground Regular Oatmeal
1 teaspoon of Honey
1 teaspoon of Avocado or Almond Oil
1 drop of Frankincense Oil
1 drop of Neroli or Lavender Oil
1 drop of Rose Oil
Use water to make a paste.
>From "The Aromatherapy Book" by Jeanne Rose

Oatmeal Mask
1 Cup Pink Clay
2 Tablespoons of Oat Flour (ground oatmeal)
1 Tablespoon Chamomile Flowers, ground
1 teaspoon finely ground Rose Hip Seeds

Mix all this together and store in an airtight container.

To use take about 1-2 Tbsp of the mask, and add enough distilled water
to get a paste consistency. I actually did a pure lemon juice (to whiten
skin and to restore skin's natural acid mantle) diluted in water, 1 tsp
honey (moisturizing), then added a couple drops of Tea Tree oil
(antibacterial). It was nice and tingly

Natural Beauty

A Journey Into Natural Beauty ~ ~ ~Facial Masks

The skin is by far the largest organ of the human body. It is extremely
sensitive to external factors, such as ultraviolet radiation, dirt and
cold weather, as well as emotional influences like the big bug-a-boo
stress. All these conditions have adverse effects on the skin. The good
news is that most problems can be prevented by proper maintenance and
care. The skin produces millions of new cells a day, regenerating itself
completely within 30-40 days, depending on the person's age. Around the
age of 35, however, the skin's natural rejuvenating processes begin to
slow considerably. However, I personally do not like to give anything a
time frame because to me it sets a limit and the mind does exactly what
you limit yourself to do. Each person will be completely different and
that of course is what makes us so unique. Moving on, at this time
(what ever that might be), the skin can greatly benefit from a facial
mask.

There are two basic types of masks: relaxing and stimulating. Relaxing
masks moisturize the skin and refresh the complexion; stimulating masks
promote blood flow and smooth and firm the skin. Before applying a mask,
cleanse the skin with a facial toner that contains lemon balm or witch
hazel.

The Proper Application

Begin by covering the chin area with the mask then move up to the cheeks
and forehead. Apply it to the nose next, moving outward toward the
cheeks. Always leave space around the mouth, eyes and eyebrows. Lastly,
spread it on the throat, moving from bottom to top. Remember always work
against the force of gravity.

F A C I A L  M A S K S

Treat yourself to a facial mask once or twice a week. Alternate between
a relaxing and stimulating mask. Apply a stimulating mask before going
out or a relaxing mask at bedtime, and leave it on for 15-20 minutes.
Always use fresh ingredients. You can prepare the mask on demand or in
advance and keep it refrigerated.

I am an advocate of as natural as can be so if you are tempted to use a
purchased mask please read its list of ingredients. If you have some
trouble understanding some of the names of the ingredients, here is a
site that will help you know the ingredient and what it does
Rule of thumb = if you cannot pronounce the word leave it alone. You
most likely don't need it.

Strawberries stimulate the skin ~ ~ ~

Strawberries are an invaluable addition to a stimulating facial mask.
They are rich in vitamin C, which perks up tired skin, giving it a
fresh, healthy look. They also contain sulfur, which has cleansing and
anti-inflammatory properties that help to remove impurities from the
skins surface AND reduce redness and swelling. Strawberries gently
refresh and exfoliate the skin via natural fruit acids and enzymes,
producing a radiant complexion.

Honey relaxes the skin ~ ~ ~

Because of its antibacterial action, honey is often used in cosmetics,
helping to disinfect and heal minor blemishes. Rich in natural sugars,
enzymes and acids, honey is effective against inflamed and swollen skin,
renewing it and promoting healing. It can also freshen dry, stressed and
sensitive skin.

Whole-wheat flour protects and renews skin ~ ~ ~

Fresh whole-wheat flour contains vitamin E, and antioxidant that binds
environmental toxins, promotes cell respiration, stimulates the
production of anti-inflammatory compounds and slows the aging process of
the skin. It has also been suggested that the vitamin may help to lower
the risk of skin cancer. It is not surprising, then, that many suntan
lotions and after-sun products contain vitamin E. Facial masks
containing flour, which contains extra fiber, may provide additional
exfoliating benefits, sloughing off dead skin cells.

E X T R A  T I P

Use soft or distilled water when preparing facial masks. Hard water
contains high concentrations of minerals and other substances that may
provoke allergic reaction. If you use tap water, boiling or filtering it
is also a good idea. When you boil tap water you also oxygenate it with
the boiling process.

~ ~Strawberry Mask~ ~
4-5 very ripe, medium-sized strawberries
2 tsp. heavy cream
1 tsp. honey

Carefully rinse strawberries in lukewarm water, and dry with a clean
towel.  In a small bowel, mash the fruit with a fork.  Add the cream and
honey, and mix well. Apply the paste generously to the face and throat,
keeping it away from the eyes.  Leave the mask on for 20-30 minutes.

Contraindications: People with sensitive or sunburn skin could have an
adverse reaction to strawberries. Test on a small area first to assess
your skin's reaction.

~ ~Whole-wheat-flour Mask~ ~
1 qt. water
4 tsp. dried or 8 tsp. fresh rose petals
Peels from 1-2 organic oranges
6 tbsp. milk
2 tbsp. rose water
2 tsp. honey
4 tbsp. whole-wheat-flour

Boil the water and remove from the heat. Add the rose petals and orange
peels, cover, and allow to steep until lukewarm or cool. In a separate
pan, heat the milk, floral water and honey; remove from the heat. Add
the flour and whisk into a thick paste. Apply the warm paste uniformly
to the face and neck. Leave on for 15-20 minutes.  Carefully wash off
the dried mask with the fragrant rose-orange water. Pat dry.  Apply your
favorite moisturizing cream to the skin.

Clays (or natural silicates), are the single most perfect base materials
for facial masks. They stimulate circulation by generating heat as they
dry, and promote toxin elimination (impurities are drawn out of the
skin's tissues like a magnet, binding to the clay minerals). Clays are
excellent for inflamed skin, because they restore it to its proper
equilibrium. Clays are perfectly safe, but can tend to dry skin if used
too often. We suggest no more than once a week. Please always use
high-quality clays...superfine grade is best - like ours, and do NOT use
pottery clay (!) it is not the same.

The Basic Facial Mask:
Easy to prepare, effective, and wonderfully relaxing! For preparation,
you'll need:
a non-metallic bowl (glass is best)
a non-metallic spoon (wood is fine)
distilled water, spring water, or floral water (this is best)
desired clay - superfine (like ours) is best
essential oils, fruit juice, etc. (optional)

Directions:
Sprinkle equal amounts of clay and distilled water (or other liquid)
into bowl. Mix until a soft paste is obtained. Let stand for several
minutes so that the clay absorbs all the water. Add any other desired
ingredients (depending on your skin type) like, essential oils, etc. If
the preparation is too liquid, add more clay - if too solid, add more
water. Apply to the skin, covering the whole face except for the eyes
and mouth area. Soak a cotton pad in water with 1 - 2 drops of German
(blue) chamomile, or place a thick cucumber slice over each eyelid. Lie
back and relax with feet elevated on a soft pillow (or place the pillow
under your knees). Allow 15-20 minutes for the clay to completely dry
(as long as the clay is wet, it is still working). Rinse with warm water
and pat dry. Follow with a spray of floral water.

Variations of "The Basic Facial Mask" for Specific Skin Types:

Normal Skin:
Use either our Moroccan red or our own rose clay mixture (a combination
of Moroccan red and French white clay). Try adding pureed cucumber, or a
little pureed avocado to the mix. Instead of water, try lavender, rose,
rose geranium, or chamomile floral water (these are appropriate for all
skin types). For a particularly effective liquid, combine 2 parts
mineral (try effervescent) or distilled water, 2 parts floral water, and
1 part aloe vera liquid. To the prepared paste, you might also add a few
drops of hazelnut, jojoba, avocado, or sweet almond oil and a few drops
of lavender, rose geranium, or chamomile essential oil.

Sensitive Skin:
Calendula herbal oil, natural honey, and our aloe vera golden gel can be
added to the paste. Rose, neroli, German (blue) or Roman (domestic)
chamomile are excellent essential oils for sensitive skin, too.

Dry Skin:
Use our French white clay and try adding pureed avocado, cucumber,
natural honey, plain yogurt, or even an egg yolk. For the liquid part,
we recommended rose, chamomile, or neroli floral water. Rose, German
(blue) chamomile, or neroli essential oils (our 7% solutions are just
fine for this). Sandalwood is also recommended for dry and sensitive
skin. A few drops of evening primrose oil can also be added. Try adding
a freshly pureed peach or apricot to the blend.

Oily Skin:
Sea clay is the best for oily skin due to its high mineral content. Oily
skin can tolerate mask treatments a little more often than dry or normal
skin, so twice a week is recommended to deep clean, remove toxins, and
stimulate circulation. An egg white or a little sea kelp (about 1/8
teaspoon) make nice additives. Again, floral waters are recommended -
lavender, rose geranium, rosemary, and chamomile are all well suited for
this mask. A few drops of rose geranium, ylang- ylang, niaouli (not to
be confused with neroli), lemon, lavender, or rosemary essential oils
can be added to the paste.

Acne/Problem Skin:
To your chosen paste, add the essential oils of ylang-ylang, rose
geranium, lemon, niaouli, thyme (red or white), rosemary, or lavender.
The masks can be applied every other day, then gradually decrease the
frequency to once a week. If skin tends to become too dry, a moisturizer
may be used after the mask.

Prematurely Aged/Wrinkled/Sun Damaged Skin:
To your basic paste, add one or a combination of - avocado, yogurt,
kelp, evening primrose oil, or a few drops of carrot seed essential oil.

Body Clays:
Follow any of the same recipes above, except you'll need "lots" more
clay! The clay should be applied about 1" (one inch) thick all over the
body (avoiding sensitive areas like the eyes, mouth, and "private
areas"). This will take no less than 1 hour to fully dry, so plan on
some quality time alone with soothing music, meditation and/or prayer.
An aromatherapy diffuser with a calming essential oil like lavender,
sandalwood, or sweet orange would make it perfect. When the clay has
fully dried, just shower it off (will not harm drains) and follow with a
fully body spray of any type floral water.

Minimizing Pore Baking Soda Mask
"After you've washed your face, place 2 tbsp. baking soda in the palm of your hand and add just enough water to form a thick paste. Massage the paste into your face, resisting the urge to scrub, for about 30 seconds. Rinse the paste away with cool water. You should notice that your pores are smaller almost immediately. After a week of this regime you'll see visible results as your skin becomes clearer and less prone to breakouts."
